Corruption Demonizes Atiku - El-Rufai Tears Former VP To Shred As Both Fights Dirty Over 2019

Corruption Demonizes Atiku - El-Rufai Tears Former VP To Shred As Both Fights Dirty Over 2019

The Punch Newspaper - Barely 24 hours after former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar absolved himself of complicity in the Halliburton scandal, Kaduna State Governor, Mallam Nasir el-Rufai, has said that Atiku is being haunted by the demons of corruption.

El-Rufai said Atiku was culpable in the Halliburton scandal that consumed American congressman, William Jefferson, who bagged a jail term in the United States of America.

In a statement he personally signed, el-Rufai, who dared Atiku to visit the United States of America if he was not culpable in the wiring of $40m to the US, implied that the former vice-president could not visit the US as a result of the scandal.

The statement entitled, “Atiku haunted by his corrupt demons,” urged Atiku to come clean with the findings of the report of the United States’ Senate Permanent Sub-Committee on Investigations which detailed the wire transfers involving the $40m from offshore companies.

El-Rufai alleged that the offshore companies wired funds into accounts controlled by Atiku and one of his wives.

Accusing the former vice-president of being obsessed with the ambition of becoming the President of Nigeria, the governor said the chieftain of the Atiku was fond of spewing out lies in an attempt to “rejuvenate his image”.

He said Atiku’s vaunting ambition made him (Atiku) support a particular group during the leadership struggle within the National Assembly, stressing that the action was disrespect for the wish of President Muhammadu Buhari.

El-Rufai said, “This statement is issued in response to the latest falsehoods emerging from Alhaji Atiku Abubakar. He has a record of spewing outright lies and innuendos against my person. As we struggle to build a law-abiding society and secure progressive outcomes for our people, we cannot allow the triumph on these shores of those who will have us move to a post-factual world.

“Not even from a man as practised as Alhaji Atiku is in the dark arts of damaging other people through a campaign of lies from him and his media machine. Therefore, I am constrained to provide a response to the fake news and irresponsible revision of recent history by Alhaji Atiku.

“The report detailing the US Senate findings is online. Alhaji Atiku should tell a better tale of why he is avoiding the United States of America.

“I never had anything to do with the incorporation of Transcorp. Those that established that company like Festus Odimegwu, Tony Elumelu, Otunba Lawal Solarin and Ndi Okereke-Onyiuke are still around and alive. As such, I could not have, and did not offer Alhaji Atiku any shares in Transcorp. I declined the shares that were offered me. Having done that, how could I have offered anyone shares?”

In an interview Atiku granted to a quarterly magazine published by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, Zero Tolerance, the former vice-president accused former President Olusegun Obasanjo of scheming to make himself life president.

Atiku also said that the pioneer Chairman of the EFCC, Mallam Nuhu Ribadu, had apologised to him for accusing him of corruption, stressing that Obasanjo and his aides decided to tag him as a corrupt person because he foiled the life presidency bid of Obasanjo.

He said, “Did he give any evidence or prove where I was corrupt? Again, this is the same el-Rufai whom I was instrumental in bringing into government and making him Director General of the Bureau of Public Enterprises, and eventually a minister.

“So, where is the evidence of corruption? It’s just not fair for you to say somebody is corrupt without substantiation. This is the same el-Rufai who testified on TV that he worked with me as DG of BPE for four years and there was never a time I asked him or instructed him to do anything unethical in those years.

“So, how am I a corrupt person? This is the same el-Rufai and others who incorporated Transcorp during my time as Vice-President and offered me shares and I declined. I wrote them officially to say it was unethical of me to accept those offers. So, where is the corruption toga coming from?”

When contacted, the Director, Atiku Media Office, Paul Ibe, said he had seen Nasir el-Rufai’s statement and that the office was preparing a response.

“We are preparing a response,” he said.

2019: The Tinubus, S'West PDP Groups In London Secret Meeting, Atiku Joins The Realignment Forces Too
New Telegraph - The crisis within the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) may have prompted some of the party’s chieftains in the South-West to commence a realignment with their kinsmen in the opposition parties, especially the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), ahead of the 2019 elections.

New Telegraph learnt from multiple sources that the alignment moves were at different stages with diverse groups, particularly those who are not pleased with the APC-led Federal Government.

Although a cold war had ensued among the various blocs in the APC immediately after the victory of the party at the 2015 general elections, the relative peace finally got ruptured after the party’s primaries for the November 26 governorship election in Ondo State.

The party’s National Leader, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu’s scathing attack on the National Chairman, Chief John Odigie-Oyegun, whom he accused of taking side with the eventual candidate of the party, Mr. Oluwarotimi Akeredolu, against his anointed, Mr. Segun Abraham, brought to fore, the party’s wide gulf.

On the other hand, the developments in the Ondo State chapter of the PDP, where Eyitayo Jegede (SAN), the candidate of Governor Olusegun Mimiko, is currently battling for the ticket with businessman, Jimoh Ibrahim of the Senator Ali Modu Sherrif ’s faction has alerted some party leaders in the zone of a possible plan of political annihilation from some Abuja-based political Turks. Relating the sequence of event to New Telegraph, a source who craved for anonymity said:

“The game has changed and the Northern bloc in the APC appears to have drawn the line against the South-West bloc, hence the need for a fresh move for realignment ahead of the 2019 polls. “It’s nothing new.

The South-West leaders and some governors in the zone from the party are the ones at the forefront of the budding coalition. Don’t forget that South- West is always progressive in nature and this new alignment is aimed at two sets of people; the former allies of Tinubu like the Afenifere bloc and some willing members of the opposition parties, who are ready to key into the process.

“Several accords have been reached and by the time the new path is unveiled, many will be shocked. Two governors in the South-West are involved. In fact, one of them met with the Afenifere recently.”

Choosing to keep mute on whether the alignment would lead to the formation of new party, the source said: “When we get to the bridge, we will cross it, but I don’t think Tinubu’s meeting with Pa Ayo Adebanjo and other Afenifere leaders was on how to form a new party, but on the need to collapse all structures into one for the South-West to speak with one voice.

“We were used and dumped by the Northern bloc of the APC loyal to Mr. President, but we have decided to take the bull by the horn and damn the attendant consequences.

Interestingly, we have the deep sympathy of the people and that is a big factor in the game of politics.” Several meetings have been held between members of the various political divides in the zone.

Though their outcomes were not made public, they point towards the realignment move. Among such meetings were those between Osun State governor, Rauf Aregbesola and his Ekiti State counterpart, Ayodele Fayose.

The former is a loyalist of Tinubu, while the latter is a known critic of President Muhammadu Buhari’s administration. Some Afenifere leaders led by Adebanjo have also met with Tinubu.

New Telegraph also learnt of another meeting between some chieftains of the PDP and the Tinubu bloc for a possible alliance. A chieftain of the party in South-West, who confirmed the meeting, however, refused to give details.

The meeting is said to have held in London. A PDP source disclosed that some APC members in South-West, who feel marginalised in the party, want to pull out.

“The truth of the matter is that certain sections of PDP want to pull out and merge with some aggrieved members of APC. A meeting was held in London apart from several meetings here in Nigeria,” he said.

He added that the picture of former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar, Governors Aregbesola and Fayose at the airport, which appeared in most national papers last week, was not by accident.

The source recalled that Fayose and Aregbesola have been exchanging visits for some time, adding “but let’s see what this turns out to.” It was further gathered that the Ahmed Makarfiled faction of the PDP had been ready for the alliance months back, but for some leaders of the party who would not want the name of the party to be changed.

“They are against the formation of an entirely new party. They are also saying that leaving the PDP now is not the best option,” the source stated. He said the decision arose following the consistent frustration in resolving the PDP leadership crisis, which started last May. “We know all along that there is external influence in what is happening in our party.

Sheriff is work-ing for the APC to destroy PDP. They are the ones sponsoring him. That is why some people want the formation of a new party. But there are others, who are not in support. That is where we are now,” he added.

While the various camps have maintained sealed lips on the matter, an insider source told our correspondent that “Tinubu’s bloc is presently receiving overtures from some gladiators in the South-East comprising PDP and the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) chieftains.

This is aside some politicians, who are believed to be out-of-touch in matters concerning the party.” Speaking on the development, the Lagos State chairman of the APC, Otunba Henry Ajomale, told New Telegraph that there was nothing wrong in Tinubu’s bloc aligning with other forces for the progress of the South- West. His words:

“There is no reason why we cannot have realignment of forces to become one and be like we used to be during the Action Group (AG) and the Unity Party of Nigeria (UPN) days.

“I don’t see anything bad in Tinubu seeing Papa Adebanjo, the late Olaniwun Ajayi and other Afenifere leaders and deciding at this time that enough is enough and that they must unite and come together like they were during the Unity Party of Nigeria and Alliance for Democracy (AD) days.”

Adebanjo, who confirmed the moves, also told New Telegraph that there is nothing wrong in Afenifere aligning with the Tinubu’s bloc ahead of the 2019 polls.

“Why not?” he retorted, adding, however, that, “It is not a question of working together; it is about those of them who walked away from those who put them in office for reasons best known to them.

They should think whether they have got the right thing where they went to or not. If they have hit the wall there, the common sense is for them to go back to where they left and we will welcome them. “In Yorubaland, no elderly man will send his bad son to the lion to be killed.

Tinubu has proved to be a disobedient boy; very stubborn. He has seen it now; then we say, he has behaved badly, but we won’t say because he has behaved badly, we will push him to the lion to be destroyed.”

But, former Minister of Transport and member of the Board of Trustees (BoT) of the PDP, Chief Ebenezer Babatope, played down the alignment plot

. “Let those behind the third force come out and announce a party. Political party is not easy to form.I am talking as an organisation man. Even if you have all the rich men of this world, it is not easy to run a political party.

So, we want to see how they want to do it to make themselves an effective third force. But as far as I am concerned, it is too late for me to start jumping ship,” he said.

Lose Tinubu And Die Politically - Buhari's Kinsmen Warn The President As More Fact of Atiku, Tinubu 2019 Alliance Re-echoes

Buhari tinubu
Northern socio-cultural and political groups have called on President Muhammadu Buhari to mend walls with the National Leader of the All Progressives Congress, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu.

The groups warned that the cold war between the duo was capable of destroying the ruling party.

Political analysts have also linked the recent disagreement between Tinubu and the APC National Chairman, Chief John Odigie-Oyegun, to the purported crisis between the former Governor of Lagos State and the President.

The Chairman, Coalition of Political Parties in Kaduna State, Muhammadu Sani-Ahmed, blamed those he described as the “kitchen cabinet” of the President for the seeming feud between Buhari and Tinubu.

“On the pages of newspapers, the two leaders have consistently denied any feud; but somebody close to them has told me there is a crisis between them,” he said.

Sani-Ahmed told Punch that with the big role played by Tinubu during the 2015 presidential election, there was a need for the two leaders to come together and settle their differences.

He said, “Nigerians are not stupid. Even the blind knows that the relationship between the President and the National Leader of APC is not cordial.

“This feud is being fuelled by those close to the President. They are telling the President the wrong things. The President and Tinubu must come together regardless of their differences to settle their rift before the 2019 elections because if it continues like this till that time, it will certainly affect the chances of the APC.”

Second Republic Member of the House of Representatives and also the Convener, Coalition of Northern Intellectuals, Politicians and Businessmen, Dr. Junaid Mohammed, had also earlier called on Buhari to apply caution in his handling of the alleged feud with Tinubu and the internal crisis in the APC.

He said, “Given the tenuous nature of this administration, the party (APC) and of course, the powerful enemies undoubtedly which Tinubu has, he (Buhari) should do well to please take it easy. Some of us believe that he (Tinubu) certainly has done some good for the party, (Muhammadu) Buhari as a person, and for the country; we would not want him to fall by the wayside as a result of lack of tact.

“I also believe that he (Tinubu), Buhari and leading members of the party must all rush back to the drawing board because rightly or wrongly, their making Buhari as the presidential candidate and his arrogance and megalomania may in fact, sooner than later, destroy the party.

“And to make matters worse, Buhari does not have a clue about forming a party or running one. If care is not taken, he will throw the party into complete disarray and by the time most of them in the party realise it, it would have been too late.‎”

ATIKU AND OYEGUN

Besides, Tinubu also accused him of subverting the decision of the party’s National Working Committee (NWC) when he submitted the name of Chief Rotimi Akeredolu (SAN) to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) as the candidate.

Regardless, before the September 28 governorship poll in Edo State, Odigie-Oyegun told newsmen he would meet with President Muhammad Buhari on the matter.

Our source further gathered that five days after the poll, Odigie-Oyegun is yet to meet with the President. A source in the NWC said, “the Presidency has scheduled the national chairman to meet with the President. There was definitely no meeting last week. We don’t know when the meeting between our chairman and the President will take place. We are hoping it will be this week.”

However, Odigie-Oyegun reportedly took his case to former Vice President Atiku Abubakar who is a chieftain of the party at the weekend.

Another source told Daily Sun that he “met with Atiku and presented his case. Remember that he said last week that most of what Tinubu wrote in his letter were not true. He told Atiku that everything concerning the Ondo primary was collective and that, it was not true that the NWC didn’t have input into submission of Akeredolu’s name as the party’s candidate…”

This is even as the party’s Deputy National Publicity Secretary, Mr. Timi Frank, wrote an open letter to the President, urging him to investigate Tinubu’s allegations if the ruling party must move forward.

In a letter addressed to President Buhari yesterday, Frank said the national chairman lacked the capacity to manage the party, noting that the former Edo State governor has not been able to resolve any crisis in the party since APC came to power.

He said: “Tinubu had in his letter published last Monday and titled, “Oyegun’s Ondo fraud: The violation of democracy in the APC,” accused the embattled national chairman of unilaterally rejecting the report and recommendations of the three-member Election Appeal Committee chaired by Mrs. Helen Bendega, which called for the cancellation of the poll that produced Rotimi Akeredolu, (SAN) and the submission of his name to INEC by Odigie-Oyegun.

2019: The UNTOLD Powerplay, Intrigue, Battle Of Cabals That Stirred Oyegun vs Tinubu's Crisis; You'll Be Shocked

Oyeguna and tinubu
A critical analysis of the recent political crisis brewing with the top ranks of the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC has been linked to the powerplay, intrigue, and the battle between major cabals that will eventually shape the outcome of the 2019 general election.

The Punch Newspaper this morning in a very depth analyses of the crisis that have ensued with the top ranks of the APC highlighted some behind-the-scene powerplays, which all were just about who becomes what in 2019.

The Punch Newspaper's Accounted that Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu undoubtedly is the biggest partner in the current political arrangement within the All Progressives Congress, having  x-rayed his influence and achievements within the last 17 years of return of Nigeria to democracy.

But recently, the fallout of the APC’s governorship primary in Ondo State has snowballed into crisis within the party and thrown up political intrigues capable of damaging its chances in the forthcoming Ondo Governorship election and even the 2019 general elections.

Tinubu, had in a communiqué from his media office on Sunday, called for the resignation of the National Chairman of the APC, Chief John Odigie-Oyegun, saying he had “dealt a heavy blow to the very party he professes to lead” by derailing from the path of progressives.

Oyegun has, however, declined to comment on Tinubu’s statement, saying he would need to consult before replying the party’s national leader, which political experts have described as understandable, considering that the latter had played a big role in the former’s emergence as the party’s national chairman.

A lawyer and political analyst, Yemi Adetoyinbo, who linked the crisis in the party to its governorship primary in Ondo State, said it was clear that Tinubu was still angry that his godson, Dr. Olusegun Abraham, lost the election to the eventual winner, Rotimi Akeredolu (SAN).

Akeredolu had 669 votes to put Abraham in second place with 635 votes.

“The election was seen to be transparent by the media but there was inkling that there would be issues when the party’s chairmen in Ondo East and Ondo West local government areas, Akintunde Samuel and Adeola Ademulegun, respectively, submitted a petition that their delegates had been replaced but the election had to go on,” he said.

“Tinubu had endorsed Abraham but others had ganged up against his godson to make sure that he was defeated, until the presidency met with them in Abuja and a list of delegates was given to them. But when the votes were cast eventually, Abraham had 635 votes and Akeredolu led with 669 votes. Olusola Oke came third and Prof. Ajayi Boroffice came fourth.

“We heard that Tinubu had guaranteed 805 votes for Abraham but that was not possible because the Osun State Governor, Rauf Aregbesola, decided to work for Oke because of his Special Adviser on Environment, Bola Ilori, who was his running mate.”

Therefore, following allegations by some party members including Oke, who specifically alleged that some names of the delegates were removed from the delegates’ list while non-delegates were allegedly allowed to vote, the APC set up a three-person Appeal Panel Committee, headed by Mrs. Helen Bendega.

Two of the committee members, which represented the majority, voted that the primary election won by Akeredolu should be cancelled and that a fresh one be organised.

The committee’s report was then submitted to the party’s National Working Committee, headed by Odigie-Oyegun, which upheld the primary and dismissed the report.

But reports that later came suggested that six out of 11 NWC members present at the meeting had voted in favour of the committee’s report and that Odigie-Oyegun had deceived the NWC by leaving to submit Akeredolu’s name to the Independent National Electoral Commission while they were praying or under the guise that he was visiting the toilet.

One of those said to have voted that the Appeal Panel Committee’s report be dismissed was the party’s National Legal Adviser, Muiz Banire (SAN), who had argued that there was no documentary evidence to support all the allegations put forward except oral accounts.

In a five-page letter to Odigie-Oyegun, Banire had recommended “the rejection of the recommendations of the Appeal Committee and the dismissal of the petitions as same are lacking in merit.”

However, Tinubu’s communiqué has enhanced the fault lines within the ruling party to make them bigger.

Analysts close to the APC say there are two major cabals and possibly three operating within the party, with Tinubu on one side, President Muhammadu Buhari on another and former Vice President and presidential aspirant, Atiku Abubakar on the third.

They say Oyegun, even though, has Tinubu to thank for his position, had acted the script of the Presidency’s cabal when he submitted Akeredolu’s name to INEC.

A source in the APC confirmed that Buhari had earlier promised to support the former NBA President, who was one of the President’s foot soldiers during the 2015 electioneering as a member of the presidential campaign committee, which was headed by the former Governor of Rivers State, now Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi.

So Amaechi is said to belong to the Presidency’s cabal along with the Minister of Power, Works and Housing, Babatunde Fashola (SAN); Minister of Solid Minerals, Dr. Kayode Fayemi; Governor Nasir El-Rufai of Kaduna State; and Governor Ibikunle Amosun of Ogun State.

Meanwhile, on the other hand is the Tinubu faction with elders of the party like its former Chairman, Chief Bisi Akande, and former Ogun State Governor, Chief Olusegun Osoba. Then the third cabal in the party is said to belong to Atiku, who has a leg in each of the other factions and still calls some shots in the PDP.

Adetoyinbo said, “We have the Presidency’s group and the Tinubu camp. What everyone did was to defeat the candidate of Tinubu. The Presidency and his team allegedly came together to ensure Akeredolu emerged winner at the Ondo APC governorship primary.

“It means that it is now a battle between the President and Tinubu and Oyegun is allegedly with the Presidency while Tinubu is on his own. So if anybody will remove Oyegun, it will have to be the President and there is no way Buhari will remove because he is enjoying his loyalty to him instead of to Tinubu, his benefactor.

“It is like a chess game, you hold your own tail and shake Tinubu’s hand while you go behind to plan against him.”

Analysts believe that President Buhari’s moves suggest that he is laying the foundation for his re-election or for the election of the person he will nominate to succeed him should he wish to pass the opportunity to go for second term to someone else.

A political analyst, Mr. Segun Balogun, said, “It appears that Buhari’s camp is after two things: one, cutting Tiinubus’ wings and two, laying the groundwork for himself or the candidate that he will anoint ahead of 2019 presidential election.

“Tinubu did not support the nominations of Fashola and Fayemi as ministers but he picked them to work with him all the same and that has won him their loyalty and broken Tinubu’s influence on them and in the region. So it is a game that will get really interesting later. Gradually, Tinubu is being demystified and the situation will repeat itself henceforth. It used to be suicidal for party members to challenge Tinubu’s anointed candidate but many people will start to do so now because some others have done it successfully.”

Also, Adetoyinbo said the Presidency’s cabal has limited Tinubu’s influence to the South-West, where it is also being threatened.

“Tinubu still has the support of Akande and Osoba, so his influence is more regional now, limited to the western region and even in the region, there is a crack. Amosun never supported Senator Adeola Solomon (YAYI) from Lagos to be anointed to succeed him as Governor of Ogun State because he is already grooming his own candidate to replace him in office.

“Tinubu nominated Wale Edun, who was his Commissioner for Finance when he was governor, to be Buhari’s Minister of Finance, but Amosun nominated Kemi Adeosun. Edun and Adeosun are both from Ogun State but Amosun convinced Buhari that Adeosun did well as his commissioner and would do well as minister.

“She is the daughter to the late Oluwole Adeosun, the renowned economist and former Managing Director of First Bank of Nigeria Plc. And Amosun, as an accountant, trusts Adeosun, so it will be difficult to remove her despite the economic crisis.

“So the practice by Tinubu to always want to plant people everywhere may not work every time as it has shown in Ondo and the National Assembly, where his candidates for the positions of Senate President and Speaker of the House of Representatives, Senator Ahmed Lawan and Femi Gbajabiamila, lost out to Dr. Bukola Saraki and Yakubu Dogara.

“Buhari is now creating his own political structure; he had none as of the time he vied to become the President because he was never a politician. So this politics will go on until 2019.”

According to Adetoyinbo, the intrigues that the APC crisis could throw up before 2019 could see Tinubu working with Atiku or Rabiu Kwankwaso, former Governor of Kano State, who is also interested in becoming the President of Nigeria someday.

He said, “They are trying to checkmate Tinubu, but if the situation continues like this, he is likely to support another candidate in 2019 and they may use one of the new parties. This is because Tinubu is not likely to run for the position himself.

“Atiku wants to be President by all means and he is working in-between the APC and the PDP and funding candidates here and there. The problem now is that Tinubu wants to be a supremo, the power broker and for Buhari to be under him. He wants to be the authentic party leader and not just a ceremonial national leader; he wants to sit down at meetings, take charge and give orders to the President but Buhari will not agree to that.

“But Kwankwaso will still want to contest and Saraki as well; all of them, including Tinubu are showing interests in new parties now. Atiku is still keeping his Peoples Democratic Movement in the cooler despite being in the APC and still funding candidates in the PDP.

“Tinubu has fielded Atiku as presidential aspirant for the ACN before and he can do it again because there is no permanent friend or enemy in politics. The two of them can still work together in 2019. Even Kwankwaso may work with Tinubu tomorrow as things stand because Tinubu will not likely support the return of Buhari for second term in office. Tinubu believes that he should be able to call the shots and anoint candidates.”

If Tinubu chooses any of the options highlighted by Adetoyinbo, it will throw up a stiff contest between the APC; the PDP, particularly, if its two factions are able to unite; and a new party that is likely to have the backing of the APC National Leader and either Atiku or Kwankwaso.

A similar situation is already playing out in Ondo State ahead of the governorship election, where Oke and his political structure are said to have almost finalised their move to Action Alliance, should Akeredolu remain the APC candidate for the election.

Oke is banking on the support of Abraham and Boroffice to defeat Akeredolu and the candidate of the PDP, Mr. Eyitayo Jegede (SAN).

Both Balogun and Adetoyinbo’s advice is that Tinubu and Buhari should close ranks and resolve the crisis in the party, describing the power of the Presidency as difficult to beat into submission.

“Buhari has the power of the Presidency and does not mind to step on toes, so even tomorrow, we can see Tinubu being hounded by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission because Buhari doesn’t believe there is any powerful toe that cannot be stepped on,” Adetoyinbo said.

Balogun said, “It will be difficult for Tinubu to win the war because even the people with him can switch alliances tomorrow and align with the Presidency because of the benefits that the office can provide.”

A member of the APC, Mr. Niyi Ajidahun, said the solution to the crisis was to have a fresh primary.

“I’m not comfortable with everything going on in the party but I think that we should cancel the primary and have a fresh one,” he said.

“Why should some people sit in Abuja and doctor the delegates’ list and say we have no resources to conduct a fresh primary? And without the support of Oke, Boroffice and Abraham in the Ondo governorship poll, I don’t think Akeredolu can win.”

2019: The Gang Up Against Tinubu THICKENS As Buhari's Men, Saraki, Atiku, Fashola, Others Reunite, In Plots To Tame Jagaban
New Telegraph - In a bid to control the levers of the All Progressives Congress (APC) ahead of the 2019 elections, major forces in the governing party are currently in a suppressed war, which has split the party into, at least, three major factions.

The internal crisis in APC is deep-seated such that the various factions have weakened the ruling party. The only difference now between APC and the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) is that in the former, it is a suppressed war, while in the latter, the party is divided along Ahmed Makarfi and Ali Modu Sheriff factions with cases on the leadership in various courts.New Telegraph learnt that there are three major tendencies in the party: Bola Tinubu, Abuja group and Buhari loyalists.

The Tinubu tendency, which has Chief Bisi Akande, former governor of Osun State and ex-Interim National Chairman of the APC with a few APC governors aligned, has been the subject of attacks from forces in the party. The tendency played a major role in the merger of the legacies party that coalesced to form APC.

The second group is the Abuja group with Governor Nasir el-Rufai of Kaduna State, Babatunde Fashola (Minister of Power, Works and Housing), Rotimi Amaechi (Minister of Transportation), and some other ministers as members.

The third tendency within the party is the core loyalists of President Muhammadu Buhari. Former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar, Senate President Bukola Saraki, Speaker Yakubu Dogara and some state governors are spread across the three tendencies.

They might eventually pull out from the APC, credible sources have disclosed. The fourth tendency is the party leadership, especially the national chairman, John Odigie-Oyegun, and national legal adviser, Muiz Banire. The party leadership is more aligned to the Abuja group. All the groups are working at cross-purposes.

While the Tinubu-Akande tendency is today strategizing on how to hold on to the South- West front, the Abuja group, led by el-Rufai, is working with the Governor Ibikunle Amosun-led South-West block to take control of the party structures in the zone from Tinubu. It was learnt that major forces in the party see Tinubu as a common enemy ahead of 2019.

“What exactly is Tinubu’s sin, no one has been told. How can someone who played a part in the electoral victories of APC at virtually all levels suddenly become a threat?” an associate of Tinubu asked. Multiple sources told New Telegraph that the idea is to weaken the support base of Tinubu ahead of 2019 general elections.

The internal strife within the APC played out in the recent governorship primaries of the party in Ondo State where the Abu-ja tendency worked against Tinubu and ensured that their preferred aspirant, Rotimi Akeredolu, emerged as the party’s candidate in the November 20 poll.

There is suspicion in the Tinubu camp that the Abuja group and the party’s national leadership manipulated the process in favour of Akeredolu. This was not the first time the Abuja group fought against Tinubu. It was learnt that the same forces fought Tinubu’s choice, James Faleke, as replacement for the late Abubakar Audu, who died before the final announcement of the Kogi State governorship election result. The Abuja group, with Buhari’s loyalists, influenced the choice of Yahaya Bello as late Audu’s replacement for the supplementary election.

“We know that there are forces within the party trying hard to weaken Tinubu’s support base in the party. The party primaries in Ondo State was just one of the battles against us. The whole process was manipulated in such a way that Tinubu’s candidate did not emerge.

They succeeded in Kogi. Now in Ondo, they seem to be having their way. But wait. Who loses in the long run? It’s the party. Not Tinubu. “In spite of our sacrifices for the party, some forces are pushing hard to turn us to onlookers in the party.

Well, we are watching how events unfold. The only thing is that we were instrumental to the emergence of this government and we won’t abandon the ship,” a loyalist of Tinubu told New Telegraph at the weekend. The Abuja/el-Rufai group has two goals – all revolve around 2019 elections – to take over the structures of the party in the South- West and boost their ambition.

There are plans for the group to produce Buhari’s successor either in 2019 or 2023. Amosun, Fashola and some ministers are coordinating the South-West block aimed at challenging the APC leader. Tinubu’s influence earned him the right to nominate the vice president for Buhari in 2015. Also, some of the ministers are fighting back over alleged attempt by Tinubu to block their nomination as ministers.

Tinubu and Amosun fell apart during the constitution of the Buhari cabinet over who takes the Ogun State slot. While Tinubu recommended his former finance commissioner, Wale Edun, Amosun opted for his finance commissioner, Kemi Adeosun. In the end, Amosun had his way as Adeosun emerged Minister of Finance.

The relationship got worse when Tinubu facilitated the return of former Governor of Ogun State, Aremo Olusegun Osoba, back to the APC. This, Amosun considered as a plot to fight him. Again, the governorship ambition of Senator Solomon Adeola representing Lagos West in 2019 has further ruptured their relationship. Amaechi is coordinating the South-South axis of the Abuja group while el- Rufai is working with some northern governors to rally the north for the APC ahead of 2019. For loyalists of Buhari, politics is secondary.

They are preoccupied with how to get Buhari on the right side of history. The Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), David Babachir, and Chief of Staff to the President, Abba Kyari, are core members of this tendency who are working on how to find solution to varying challenges confronting the country. The tendency depends on all groups within the party. Buhari has remained indifferent in the crisis rocking his party.
