PDP Crisis: 'Smart' Sen. Ben Bruce Queues Behind Sheriff, Blasts Party's Stance As PDP Considers 5 Lifelines At Emergency Meeting

Ben Bruce And Sheriff
In a move that could be described as 'smart', the renown Bayelsa State Senator and media guru, Ben Bruce has dumped the Ahmed Makarfi-led faction of the opposition Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, thereby queueing behind the Ali Modu Sheriff's.

The Appeal court on Friday had declares the former Borno Governor as the authentic national Chairman of the party. the ruling which does not go down well with majority of the leadership of the party.

Senator Ben Murray Bruce threw his weight behind Sheriff yesterday.

He offered, via his Twitter handle, to work with the former Borno State governor.
In a tweet which he entitled ‘My Position on the Appeal Court’s judgement concerning the Leadership of the PDP,’ he said the PDP has embarked on the path of destruction.

“Concerning the PDP, the current bickering is childish and irrelevant,” he said.

“I am not in support of anymore litigation. We will work with Ali Modu Sheriff and go to a convention. Right now, PDP is on a course towards destruction and abiding by the judgement of the court is the only thing that can save us.

“In the first place, it is never the job of the judiciary to choose the leader of a party. I therefore call an end to the fighting. And I am supporting Ali Modu Sheriff because it is the only way to preserve the party. Right now, what Nigeria has is a one-party state – there is no opposition. Enough is enough. This is the time for PDP to unite, we are a formidable force.”

But the Makarfi camp insisted on having nothing to do with Sheriff.

Spokesman for the group, Prince Dayo Adeyeye said in a statement that the Appeal Court judgment cannot stand as it is nothing short of a “travesty of justice, a mockery of valid facts, miscarriage of justice and an invidious attempt to destroy the PDP.”

“We will certainly appeal to the Supreme Court. No reconciliatory effort will stop it. We need the Supreme Court to make a pronouncement on the issue once and for all,” he said.

“We maintain that this is a continuation of the attempt to kill the PDP and thereby destroy all opposition in Nigeria. The rebels in the party who were favoured by the two justices of the Appeal Court are snakes within the house working for the ruling party, the APC.
“The great conspiracy to silence the PDP is an assault on the Nigerian democracy. We are however determined to resist this onslaught to the very last. The struggle continues.”

The APC through its National Publicity Secretary Mallam Bolaji Abdullahi denied having a hand in the crisis rocking the PDP.

The party said it has no interest in who emerges as the national chairman of the opposition party or how the PDP handles its internal affairs.

Abdullahi insisted, in an interview, that the crisis within the PDP is of no interest whatsoever to the APC or the government of President Muhammadu Buhari and urged the opposition party to stop looking for who to blame for the glaring division in its ranks.

He said:”What is happening in the PDP is their internal problem. I am not a member of their party and I can tell you that APC is not interested in the cries. We have no interest whatsoever in who emerges as the national chairman of the opposition party or in how the PDP handles its internal affairs.

“Whoever is alleging that APC has a hand in the crisis or the judgements does not know what he or she is talking about. I will just want the world to know that APC as the ruling party is not interested in what goes on in the PDP, especially their internal scheming. We also do not care how they get to settle their problems.

“I will also challenge those making the allegations to be specific by mentioning names of person who intervened in the said judgement as alleged. It is when we all get to hear such names if any exists, that we can all look at how APC is involved. Until then, I want to advise PDP to find solutions to their problems without mentioning APC. Above all, I want to say the allegation is laughable,” Abdulahi said.

The Appeal Court, in declaring Sheriff the rightful national chairman of the PDP, also nullified the National Caretaker Committee of the party led by Senators Ahmed Makarfi.

Two of the three-member Appeal Court, Justice B.G. Sanga and Justice A. Gumel, in their judgment said the Port Harcourt convention on May 21, 2016, was an abuse of court process.

Delivering the lead judgment, Sanga said that PDP did not follow the provisions of Article 47(3) of its Constitution in the removal of the Sherrif-led National Working Committee.

Justice Theresa Agbadua Orji, in her own judgment, said she found it difficult to agree with the positions of the two judges on the matter.

She argued that the contentious issue in the matter which was the judgment of July 4, 2016 by the lower court did not constitute any abuse of court process by the respondent as alleged.

She maintained that Sheriff actively participated in the screening exercise of the party before he backed out, emphasizing that he had no power as an individual to cancel or postpone the national convention because he was not the party.

The fate of the beleaguered Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) may be sorted out tomorrow at an emergency meeting of the expanded National Caucus of the party in Abuja.

The meeting summoned by the Ahmed Makarfi faction is in response to weekend’s ruling of the Court of Appeal, Port Harcourt which sacked the Makarfi-led Caretaker Committee and reinstated Senator Ali Modu Sheriff as the rightful national chairman.

Five options have been listed for consideration at the meeting, The Nation gathered authoritatively, yesterday.

Sheriff offered yesterday to make sacrifices to ensure the unity of the party and branded the court’s ruling as victory for all.

“Sheriff is no winner and Makarfi is no loser, because there is no winner and there is no vanquished. It’s a misunderstanding within our fold,” he told reporters in Abuja.

Sheriff got the backing of Senator Ben Bruce (Bayelsa East) who called the bickering in the party as childish and irrelevant.

He said no to further litigation to resolve the crisis.

At tomorrow’s meeting of the expanded caucus of the PDP, members are scheduled to consider the following options and build consensus on the most practicable to save the party.

They are:

  • File an appeal against the Court of Appeal’s ruling which declared Sheriff as the valid National Chairman of PDP
  • Allow the status quo to remain with Sheriff in charge of the party till August
  • Negotiate with Sheriff’s faction to find amicable political solutions to the crisis
  • Leave PDP en masse for Sheriff.
  • Leave Sheriff to tow the path of honour and bow out as he promised in the past.

Expected at the forum are PDP governors, members of the National Executive Committee (NEC), BOT members, ex-Ministers, party members in the National Assembly especially principal officers, and chairmen of the state chapters of PDP.

The Board of Trustees of PDP is also likely to follow suit on Tuesday and the Forum of ex-Ministers on Thursday.

The BoT, the PDP Governors Forum and the Forum of ex-Ministers are all on Makarfi’s side.

They said in separate statements at the weekend that on no account can they work with Sheriff.

The spokesman of the Forum of ex-Ministers, Prof. Abubakar Suleiman, said: “We are holding an Expanded Caucus meeting on Monday to review the ruling and chart a way forward whether to file an appeal at the Supreme Court against the decision of the Court of Appeal on Friday or allow the status quo to remain.

“We have many options on the table but those in favour of taking the battle to the Supreme Court are in the majority.

“But some have asked for political solutions because they are tired of litigations. They think that the prolonged court case is affecting the fortunes of the party.

“It is when we meet that we will try to build consensus on any of the alternatives which we may consider viable and realistic.

“No one knows how long the case will take at the Supreme Court and Anambra State Governorship poll is around the corner. We need to do a lot of work to reshape the party.

“Some of our leaders are saying if Sheriff means well, if he is working in the interest of the party, why can’t he take a bow?”

Asked if PDP leaders might leave the party for Sheriff, the ex- National Planning Minister said: “The possibility is remote. I don’t see the possibility for now.”

However, Alhaji Ali Modu Sheriff yesterday asked Senator Ahmed Makarfi to join him in fixing the party.

Sheriff, at a press conference in Abuja declared the judgment a no-winner-no-vanquished situation, adding that he was ready to make sacrifices to ensure the unity of the party.

His words:”It’s victory for all. Sheriff is no winner and Makarfi is no loser because there is no winner and there is no vanquished. It’s a misunderstanding within our fold.

“This is the beginning of good things to come. I am not interested in sitting tight in office as national chairman but to ensure the conduct of credible convention to elect leaders for the PDP.”

The former Borno State Governor however parried questions regarding the expiration of his tenure as chairman, saying: “my tenure as chairman is immaterial. I am not talking about my tenure.”

He hinted that he would open consultations with the governors, the BoT, the National Assembly caucus and the various reconciliation committees set up by the party.

According to him, the consultations will start immediately, adding that his team would ensure the re-opening of the party’s secretariat which was sealed off by the police last June.

Sheriff maintained that the consultations would lead to the process of drawing up a programme for conducting national convention and congresses in states where the last exercise was inconclusive.

The party chairman cautioned the various stakeholders against making inflammatory statements that could further compound the party’s problems.

“Well meaning Nigerians want the PDP to be united. My hands are clean and I have nothing to hide. I am ready to make sacrifices to ensure the unity of the party.

“We want the culture of impunity to stop, we should learn to do things the right way by giving the party back to the people”, Sheriff added.

With Sheriff at the briefing were Senator Hope Uzodinma, Chief Chris Uba, and Senator Seidu Kumo, among others.

Meanwhile, the All Progressives Congress (APC) reacting to allegation by prominent members of the Makafi faction of the PDP that it engineered the court ruling dismissed such views as laughable.

The APC said it is none of its business who heads PDP.

“We commend the minority judgment of the lower court and we believe the truth will prevail. Thank God we have another opportunity to seek justice at the Supreme Court, which I believe will not be delayed or denied.

“The party will appeal the judgement as we believe in the ability of the judiciary to do justice, however we plead with our members, leaders and supporters to calm down as we keep hope alive.

The resolution is coming on the heels of submission of the report of Strategy Review/Inter Party Affairs Committee led by Prof Jery Gana, The Sun Newspaper confirmed this

National Vice Chairman of the PDP, South-East zone, Chief Austin Umahi, who is also a member of the committee, yesterday, expressed optimism that the party after the implementation of the recommendations of the committee would become more united and better positioned to win elections. Umahi said PDP controlled states in the zone are the most developed and economically viable, adding that Governors Okezie Ikpeazu (Abia), David Umahi (Ebonyi) and Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi (Enugu) have done the party proud by delivering democracy dividends to the people of their states

Few days after Makarfi's confidence vote by Southeast PDD, the leadership of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the South-West yesterday passed a vote of confidence in Senator Ali Modu-Sheriff as the national chairman of the party.

“All hands must be on deck to ensure total victory in the entire South-West and Nigeria in 2019. Our detractors had expected the crack in the family to be the beginning of our end. Sequel to media reports over the purported formation of new mega party, which reportedly will be announced by March 2017, the national leader of the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu  has denied ever insinuation such, or his involvement.

In the report, Tinubu was reportedly working with the former Vice President, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar and the Peoples Democratic party faction of Alhaji Ahmed Makarfi to form the party in preparation for 2019 Presidential election.

According to the former governor of Lagos state, he would not do anything to undermine the success of APC, a party that he laboured to build with other concerned Nigerians.

This is a party I labored with others to build. We would not abandon it for another. Millions of Nigerians who voted are watching and praying

He also vowed not to abandon his position as a progressive politician. He noted that in the bid to make Nigeria great again, it is quite natural for things to be amended and he has accepted this.

The former Lagos State Governor, made these disclosure via several tweets in his twitter handle @AsiwajuTinubu

JEGEDE
The National PDP Professionals and Business Group (NPPBG) has congratulated the National Caretaker Committee of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) led by Senator Ahmed Makarfi and the party’s flag bearer in this weekend’s governorship election in Ondo State, Eyitayo Jegede over the land mark victories it got in both the Supreme Court and Court of Appeal.

In a press statement Thursday, the National Coordinator of NPPBG, Dr. Arome Salifu said the confirmation by the Court of Jegede as the party’s candidate for the Ondo election is a reflection of the wishes and desires of millions of party members and supporters worldwide.

While reiterating the confidence of the NPPBG in the ability of the Makarfi led caretaker committee to get the party out of its current crises, Dr. Salifu urged Senator Ali Modu Sheriff, erstwhile party flag bearer, Jimoh Ibrahim and other members of their faction to collapse their structures in support of the wish of the people.

The NPPBG which is an arm of the party has not spared any effort in trying to restore peace and harmony back into the erstwhile ruling party.

Dr. Salifu also congratulated Governor Olusegun Mimiko and millions of party faithful in Ondo State on the hard earned victory. He urged them not to be discouraged by the time spent pursuing the court victory but to mobilise voters en-masse and ensure Jegede’s victory on Saturday.

“We cannot afford to lose Ondo State to any other party and so no effort should be spared to ensure victory for the PDP at the Ondo governorship poll,” he said.

2019, which will mark another political dispensation in Nigeria may still be far, but some who-is-who Nigerian politicians are already leaving no stone un-turned to ensure the tides favour them, this is as reports have signaled there are already alignment and realignment within the political parties

Senator Ali Modu Sheriff faction of the opposition Peoples Democratic Party, PDP has revealed that there are already talks with over 75% Senators of the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC over possible return to the party ahead of 2019 Presidential election, report according to Punch Newspaper says.

This is even as the Sherif faction also accused the Alhaji Ahmed Makarfi faction of wooing some aggrieved APC leaders, who have lost out in the President Muhammadu Buhari's government to form new party

Though, no name of the aggrieved APC Chiefs was mentioned, but it no news that the national leader of the APC, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu undoubtedly aggrieved over poor treatment he has suffered within the party, despite his unmatched effort to bring the party to power in 2015

According to Punch Newspaper report, Sherrif faction accused the Makarfi-led National Caretaker Committee of plot to dump the PDP after ensuring that it had gained sufficient confidence of those who appeared to have lost out in the APC.

The Punch Newspaper further accounted that, a member of the National Working Committee of the party under Sheriff, who spoke on condition of anonymity, wondered why the Makarfi camp would set up what he described as “inter-party committee” instead of “intra-party” committee to reposition the former ruling party ahead of 2019.

The source added, “They (members of the Makarfi group) have been meeting clandestinely with some disgruntled members of the APC with a view to forming a new party ahead of 2019.

“They are also talking with those who have corruption cases against them by either the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, the Independent Corrupt Practices and other related offences Commission, the Police or the Code of Conduct Tribunal.

He said, “They are looking for people of questionable character and all those who are not happy with President Muhammadu Buhari in the APC are their target.

“How do you set up an inter-party committee when the problem is with us, the PDP alone?

“Why would they be scouting for people who have corruption cases against them, and those who are being tried for one criminal case or the other?

“For us, we will take the party to the people who own it and we won’t allow just one governor to lord it over the people of his state at all times.”

It was also learnt that the Sheriff faction had concluded plan to set up a rival committee on how to rejuvenate the troubled party.

Membership of the proposed committee, which will be named before Monday, was debated by the faction at its meeting in Abuja on Wednesday.

The PUNCH gathered that the committee would perform the function as the one set up by the camp of the National Caretaker of the party, led by Senator Ahmed Makarfi in Abuja on Monday.

While Makarfi’s committee is to interface with some aggrieved members of the party and its former members, who have defected to other political parties, the Sheriff committee, it was gathered, would discuss how to re-position the PDP alone.

Makarfi’s committee, known as the Strategy Review and Inter-Party Affairs, has more than 115 members.

Among its terms of reference are how to explore strategies to engage “all possible allies” with a view to building positive relationship in the overall interest and in furtherance of democracy in Nigeria and also consider and recommend strategies to reposition the party.

The committee is also saddled with the responsibility of recommending necessary amendment to the constitution of the party.

Speaking on the proposed committee, the Acting National Publicity Secretary of the Sheriff faction, Mr. Bernard Mikko, said the committee members would be unveiled soon.

He said, “Recall that the party was in dire need of reorganisation and rejuvenation due to the blatant impunity that led to our defeat at the 2015 presidential election, and the subsequent leadership crisis that has threatened the unity and cohesion of the party.

“Also recall that feuding camps agreed to reconcile, diminish tendencies of impunity and strengthen the party based on the principles of rule of law.

“The discussions following the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding suffered a setback due to extraneous forces within the Makarfi camp.

“However, the NWC, under the leadership of Senator Ali Modu Sheriff, is determined to put reconciliation back on track in the face of impending inclination of the Makarfi camp to forming a new political movement or exploring ways of leaving the PDP.

“We believe the name is not the problem, but these vested interests that led us to defeat at the last presidential election and bent on perpetuating themselves in public service at all costs.

“The PDP, under the leadership of Sheriff, will reposition the party and appeals to all stakeholders not to succumb to the antics of the nomadic forces behind the leadership crisis.”

The Makarfi group, however, said the committee was free to discuss with anyone within the PDP and outside the party.

It stated that the committee didn’t have the instruction or mandate to discuss the change of name of the PDP for now.

The PDP faction nevertheless added that the report of the committee would be exhaustively discussed at a higher level before a final decision was taken on the matter.

Spokesperson for the party, Mr. Dayo Adeyeye, who spoke with The PUNCH on Wednesday, claimed that more than 75 per cent of APC senators wanted to return to the PDP.

He said, “More than three quarter of the senators are already discussing the possibility of being in our party and form an alliance with us.

“You know how the APC came into being. We are already discussing with them and individually, the senators and other are already discussing the possibility of forming an alliance with us.

“We don’t want solo discussion and this is the reason why we have to form a committee to handle such discussions.”

Adeyeye, a former Minister of State for Works during the regime of former President Goodluck Jonathan, said the question on the possibility of changing the name of the PDP would be discussed at a higher quarters.

“We want to regain power democratically in 2019. We are doing everything possible to get it,” he added.

2019: PDP Faction Inches Close To Form New Party With Aggrieved APC Members, Others
Amidst the unresolved intra-party crisis within its fold, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) may have decided to chart a new course by setting in motion a process that would eventually lead to the formation of a new political alliance ahead of the 2019 general election.

In this regard, the main opposition party under the leadership of the National Caretaker Committee chairman, Senator Ahmed Makarfi, will today inaugurate a committee known as the Strategy Review and Inter-Party Affairs Committee under the chairmanship of Professor Jerry Gana.

The new committee, which is made up of 85 prominent leaders of the PDP, also has the former Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Mr. Austin Opara, as its secretary.

PDP’s move is a reflection of the new thinking among its key leaders who having been frustrated at resolving the differences with the factional national chairman, Senator Ali Modu Sheriff, and are now looking for an alternative platform.

According to sources at the secretariat of the Makarfi-led PDP in Abuja, the inauguration of the committee will formally open up the process of dialogue and consultations with other political parties, including former members of the PDP who left to join the All Progressives Congress (APC), with a view to building a formidable platform.

Although the terms of reference for the committee were not published along with the membership of the committee in the newspaper advertisement published last week, it was gathered that the list of prominent politicians that make up the committee was indicative that the party was looking towards a re-alignment ahead of the 2019 elections.

Some of the members of the committee include Senators Adolphus Wabara, Ibrahim Mantu, Sam Egwu, Ibrahim Kazaure, Stella Omu, Iyiola Omisore, Adamu Gumba, Emmanuel Bwacha, Saidu Kumo, Ayo Adeseun, Tunde Ogbeha, Ibrahim Ida and Hon. Emeka Ihedioha.

Others are former Governors Attahiru Bafarawa, Peter Obi, Liyel Imoke, Gbenga Daniel, Abdulkadir Kure, Sule Lamido, Idris Wada, Boni Haruna, Babangida Aliyu, Jonah David Jang and Mukhtar Yero.

Others include Mukhtar Shagari, Salimot Makanjuola Badru, Chief Tom Ikimi, Chief Onyema Ugochukwu and Chief Dubem Onyia.
The move to form a new political alliance is coming just as more facts have emerged on why the recent peace initiative in PDP collapsed.

It was gathered from reliable sources in the factions of the party led by Senators Makarfi and Sheriff that both sides disagreed on the composition of the reconciliation committee and who will chair it.

It was learnt that soon after Makarfi and Sheriff accepted to forge peace and settle their differences, the feuding sides accepted that one of the founding fathers of the party and the former National Security Adviser, Alhaji Aliyu Mohammed Gusau, should be the one to mediate on the crisis.

Both Sheriff and Makarfi attended several peace meetings in the residence of Gusau where ideas were canvassed on how to go about setting up the reconciliation committee.

The party leaders had initially settled for 12 nominees on both sides to the committee, but had to review it to 15 at the request of Makarfi.

A source said Makarfi later changed his mind and suggested that the committee be slashed to just three representatives each from both sides of the divide, which Sheriff accepted.

According to another source from the Sheriff camp, the disagreement arose when the issue of who would chair the reconciliation committee was to be decided.

He noted that while Sheriff proposed that he and Makarfi should both step down to allow members of the reconciliation committee to choose a chairman from among themselves to pilot the affairs of the party till the next convention, Makarfi was reluctant to give up his position and objected to the idea.

“It was at this stage that Sheriff then proposed that the reconciliation committee should be headed by former President Goodluck Jonathan, but Makarfi also rejected the idea, leading to a stalemate,” the source revealed.

The source, who claimed to have monitored the proceedings closely, spoke of how Makarfi kept most of the stakeholders of the party on his side in the dark about the true picture of things regarding his talks with Sheriff.

For instance, the source alleged that Makarfi failed to relay to the leaders of the National Assembly Caucus of the party the offers made by Sheriff to step down if Makarfi was ready to do likewise.

According to the source, it got to a point where the former Deputy Senate President Ibrahim Mantu arrived from his South African trip and enquired to know the progress on the peace talks, only to discover from Gusau that Sheriff had indeed been forthcoming with offers on how to end the lingering dispute in the party.

However on his part, Makarfi blamed Sheriff for reneging on the agreements they reached.

He had told journalists in an interview in Kaduna at the weekend that the key area where they had a problem was the issue of the terms of reference for the reconciliation committee.

He said: “What we agreed was that the other side (Sheriff’s faction) will join the caretaker committee (Makarfi’s committee). And that was the basic agreement that was reached.

“We should set up an equal number of party men and women that would sit down and look at the modality for integrating the two sides into a new caretaker committee and also draw the modality for the withdrawal of all court cases or consensual settlement of the cases.

“We agreed that in withdrawing all cases, let it be something that we all consent to so as to prevent future litigation.

“Later, I was the one that sent a message that we needed to expand it to 15 because instead of two governors we wanted to include three governors in order to carry everybody along.

“So, that was how we hit the figure 15 on each side. And the issue now became who will chair that committee and the terms of reference. On who to chair the committee, there were names that were mentioned.

“In my opinion, I thought of the person who was able to convene us without dispute should be able to chair the committee. In suggesting any other name you don’t know how it would be received by other people.

“On the choice of former President Goodluck Jonathan to chair the reconciliation committee, Makarfi said the advice against it was that the former president should not be dragged into the crisis at the moment but that he can continue to play an advisory role.”
