FG plans special training for prosecutors nationwide

FG plans special training for prosecutors nationwide
Plans by the Federal Government to build capacity of prosecutors across the 36 states of the Federation on the modern techniques of drafting charges which is in furtherance to the request by the Body of Attorneys-General of the States in Nigeria have reached advanced stage.

The special training which is expected to begin on the first week of March and concluded on the last week of May, this year is also in line with the objectives of the President Muhammadu Buhari administration to fast-track the prosecution of high profile cases some of which will be handled at the state level and to stem corruption.


A press statement made available to the media on Wednesday by Comrade Salihu Othman Isah, Special Adviser on Media and Publicity to the Honourable Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami, SAN disclosed that the special training to be held at zonal level will kick-start in Yola, Adamawa state for the North East zone on March 7th-8th, 2017.

According to the training schedule drawn out by the Special Assistant to the President on Research and Special Projects, Mr. Sylvester Imhanobe, it will round up on May 30th-31st, 2017 in Ibadan for the South West zone.

The other zones are as follows: North West (March 22nd-23rd) to be hosted in Kaduna state, North Central (April 4th-5th) in Jos, Plateau state, South East (April 22nd-23rd) in Enugu, Enugu state as well as South South (May 9th-10th) in Benin City, the Edo state capital.

Isah hinted that the training to be spearheaded by the Office of the Honourable Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice is sequel to the proposal by the National Prosecution Coordination Committee (NPCC) in collaboration with the Presidential Advisory Committee Against Corruption (PACAC) and the United Nations Office on Drugs and Corruption (UNODC) to organize the training.

A letter of invitation to the Attorney Generals and Commissioners of Justice of the 36 states of the Federation to nominate participants to attend the training signed by Imhanobe who doubles as the Secretary of the NPCC and titled, Invitation to nominate participants to attend a special capacity building workshop for prosecutors on drafting charges read inter alia that:

“On the request of the Body of Attorneys-General of the States of the Federation for support to training prosecutors in the States on drafting charges, I am pleased to inform you that the Honourable Attorney-General of the Federation, Abubakar Malami, SAN has approved the request of the Body.

“To this end, the HAGF has also approved the proposal of the National Prosecution Coordination Committee of the Federal Ministry of Justice (NPCC/FMOJ) in collaboration with the Presidential Advisory Committee against Corruption (PACAC) and the United Nations Office on Drugs and Corruption (UNODC) to organise the training programme.

The proposed training programme will be conducted on the basis of geo-political zones”, it concluded.
