In a dramatic turn of events, President Bola Tinubu has directed members of the Lagos State House of Assembly to reinstate Mudashiru Obasa as Speaker, nearly three weeks after his impeachment rocked Nigeria’s commercial capital, report according to People Gazette detailed

The development came after the president intervened, citing the potential political fallout of Obasa’s removal, which had been linked to allegations of corruption and abuse of office, Gazette reports

According to our source, a senior Lagos politician who attended weekend meetings disclosed that the president instructed lawmakers to begin the process of Obasa’s return, assuring them it would be a temporary arrangement.

“The president has made it clear that Obasa will be reinstated but will step down on his own terms after a short period,” the source revealed. “We agreed to this to avoid political complications.”

However, some lawmakers remain apprehensive, fearing repercussions from reinstating a leader they previously ousted. “Bringing him back is like reviving a snake after cutting off its head,” a legislator remarked.

To consolidate the decision, President Tinubu has reportedly summoned key stakeholders to Abuja on Monday, where further discussions will take place.

Obasa was impeached on January 13 after The Gazette exposed his alleged mismanagement of billions in procurement funds. Lasbat Mojisola Meranda was named Speaker in his place, but insiders claim she has struggled to assert her authority.

Notably, Obasa has refused to vacate the Speaker’s official residence in Ikeja G.R.A., despite his impeachment. “He claimed he needed to retrieve personal belongings but has remained in the lodge,” a source disclosed.

There is speculation about the role of First Lady Remi Tinubu in the president’s decision, especially after reports surfaced that she had previously intervened to prevent the EFCC from arresting Obasa.

While the directive may deepen divisions within Lagos’ political circles, Tinubu’s dominance over the state’s politics means dissent is unlikely. “Some lawmakers feel betrayed,” a source admitted. “But no one wants to challenge the president’s authority.”

The People’s Gazette also reported that, an aide to Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu confirmed that Obasa met with the governor in Marina on Saturday to finalize his return, which could happen as early as next week.
