FIFA Friendly: Iheanacho's Goal Rescues Nigerian From Senegal Defeat

FIFA Friendly: Iheanacho's Goal Rescues Nigerian From Senegal Defeat

Kelechi Iheanacho
The Manchester City striker cancelled out Moussa Sow’s opener to ensure Gernot Rohr's men share the spoils with the Teranga Lions

An 83rd minute penalty from Kelechi Iheanacho helped Nigeria secure a 1-1 draw against Senegal in their friendly encounter at the Hive Stadium in London.

Moussa Sow had given the Teranga Lions an early second half lead but they could secure victory against the Super Eagles.

The Senegalese started the brighter of both sides in the opening 20 minutes with Idrissa Gueye exerting his influence. And their best chance of the half fell to Sow who rattled the woodwork from close range.

Halfway into the match, Super Eagles skipper for the night, Ogenyi Onazi was stretched off after collision with the Teranga Lions striker, Mame Diouf. The Trabzonspor midfielder was replaced by John Ogu.

And Ogu’s combination with Wilfred Ndidi at the heart of the midfield shifted the momentum to the Rohr’s men.

Nigeria could have gone ahead on two occasions, both opportunities falling to Iheanacho. The Manchester City man fizzled a low shot across the face of the Senegalese goal before missing a point blank effort after some good work from Alex Iwobi and Moses Simon. The first half ended goalless.

After the interval, the Senegalese regained dominance and were rewarded nine minutes into the half after Sow benefitted from poor defending to get the curtain raiser.

Rohr rang the changes with Ogenekaro Etebo and debutant, Isaac Success coming on for Iwobi and Simon respectively.

Etebo almost had an instant impact after an Eagles' breakaway saw Iheanacho release the Feirense attacker whose effort was parried.

However, the Eagles would have the final say in the match after Iheanacho was tripped in the area by goalkeeper Pape Ndiaye and the youngster made no mistake from 12-yard out to rescue Nigeria from their first loss under Rohr. The strike also marked his fifth in his last six games for the national team.

The Super Eagles will now play their second friendly encounter against Burkina Faso at the same venue on March 27.

Ferguson To Return As Manchester United Head Coach By June

Ferguson To Return As Manchester United Head Coach By June

ALEX FERGUSON AND JOSE MOURINHO
Sir Alex Ferguson will return to the Old Trafford dugout to manage the Manchester United 2008 XI, in Michael Carrick’s testimonial game this year.

This was confirmed via the Premier League club’s official Twitter handle on Monday morning.

Ferguson stepped down as manager of the Red Devils after the 2012/2013 season.

Harry Redknapp, who managed the former England midfielder at West Ham United, will be in charge of the Michael Carrick All-Star XI.

“I think the best bit will be seeing the players, to be honest with you,” Ferguson told MUTV.

“No [I don’t miss managing]. I miss the big games of course but I made my decision and I’m enjoying it. I don’t have to worry about you lads or the agents or the press conferences and having to control that press secretary of mine!

“I’m delighted Michael is getting a testimonial. It tells you Manchester United are probably the only club in England that can do that. Players do tend to stay a long time here. We don’t have players here one minute and gone the next. If you go right back to my time, most of the players stayed 10 or even more years. I think we can be proud of that fact, being a family-type club. It encourages players to put roots down here and enjoy it.

“I read about what Michael’s intentions are [with the funds raised for the event] and I think it’s very honourable. I think he’s shown he’s prepared to share his success and his contribution to the charity, starting it himself, will be very, very worthwhile.”

The testimonial will be played on June 8 and kick-off is 4pm.

CAF Election: ...And Ahmad Defeats Issa Hayattou, Emerges CAF New President

AHMAD AHMAD NEW CAF PRESIDENT
After a vote at the governing body's Congress in Addis Ababa, the Madagascan was named as the new leader, replacing Issa Hayatou

Madagascan football administrator Ahmad Ahmad has been named the new Caf President after defeating incumbent Issa Hayatou in Thursday’s vote.

In the election, which was held at Caf’s 39th General Assembly in Addis Ababa, Ahmad defeated Hayatou in a shock result after picking up 34 votes to the 70-year-old’s 20.

Hayatou had been in power since 1988 when he replaced Abdel Halim Mohammad, and has overseen significant growth in the continental game and in Caf’s standing within the global football community.

The Cameroonian who as a result of this defeat will lose his position on the ruling council of world football's governing body, was led from the auditorium by aides who ignored requests for comment from media.

In contrast, Ahmad was carried on the shoulders of supporters to the podium after the result was announced. He becomes the body’s seventh president after Abdel Aziz Abdallah Salem (1957-1958), Abdel Aziz Moustafa (1958-1968), Abdel Halim Muhammad (1968-1972), Yidnekatchew Tessema (1972-1987), Abdel Halim Muhammad (1987-1988) and Issa Hayatou (1988-2017).

BREAKING: Claudio Ranieri SACKED As Leicester City Manager

BREAKING: Claudio Ranieri SACKED As Leicester City Manager

Claudio Ranieri
Reports coming from England claimed Claudio Ranieri has been sacked as manager of Leicester City.

The 65-year-old Italian masterminded the Foxes to their first ever Premier League title last season in what was arguably the greatest achievement in the history of the English top flight.

A Statemen by the club read:

Leicester City Football Club has tonight (Thursday) parted company with its First Team Manager, Claudio Ranieri.

Claudio, appointed City manager in July 2015, led the Foxes to the greatest triumph in the Club’s 133-year history last season, as we were crowned champions of England for the first time. His status as the most successful Leicester City manager of all time is without question.

However, domestic results in the current campaign have placed the Club’s Premier League status under threat and the Board reluctantly feels that a change of leadership, while admittedly painful, is necessary in the Club’s greatest interest.

Vice Chairman Aiyawatt Srivaddhanaprabha said: “This has been the most difficult decision we have had to make in nearly seven years since King Power took ownership of Leicester City. But we are duty-bound to put the Club’s long-term interests above all sense of personal sentiment, no matter how strong that might be.

“Claudio has brought outstanding qualities to his office. His skilful management, powers of motivation and measured approach have been reflective of the rich experience we always knew he would bring to Leicester City. His warmth, charm and charisma have helped transform perceptions of the Club and develop its profile on a global scale. We will forever be grateful to him for what he has helped us to achieve.

“It was never our expectation that the extraordinary feats of last season should be replicated this season. Indeed, survival in the Premier League was our first and only target at the start of the campaign. But we are now faced with a fight to reach that objective and feel a change is necessary to maximise the opportunity presented by the final 13 games.”

First Team preparations for Monday’s Premier League fixture against Liverpool will resume on Saturday, with Assistant Manager Craig Shakespeare and First Team Coach Mike Stowell taking charge of the squad until a new manager is appointed.

Assistant Manager and First Team Coach Paolo Benetti and First Team Sport Science and Conditioning Coach Andrea Azzalin have also parted company with the Club and leave with our thanks for their service and best wishes for the future.

The Board will now begin the recruitment process and will make no further comment until that process is completed.
