Nzeogwu One Week After The Coup?

Nzeogwu One Week After The Coup?

For a long time, I have wondered what must have been going on in Major Chukwuma Nzeogwu’s mind in the days following the January 15, 1966 coup.

He was only 27 years old, just one year younger than my own son today. Sometimes I imagine what it would feel like if I suddenly heard that my son had participated in killing the leaders of a country. I would collapse from shock because only a deeply misguided young man could think such an action was a solution to political problems.

A group of angry and immature young officers, boys, really, convinced themselves that killing political leaders and senior military officers was the answer to Nigeria’s frustrations. They believed violence could magically purify society. Like many reckless young people throughout history, they mistook destruction for heroism.

But reality arrived quickly.

This is what Gowon wrote about meeting Nzeogwu after the failed coup:

"Following his capitulation, (Major Chukwuma) Nzeogwu was brought to Lagos and admitted at the Lagos University Teaching Hospital (LUTH) where I went to see him. I asked why they killed all senior officers in Lagos and Kaduna, and further asked, ‘do you realise the damage this has done to the esprit de corps of the army and the Nigerian armed forces?’ After I asked, ‘why did you kill Ademulegun?’, I realised I should not have bothered because the answer to the question was obvious. Everyone knew he was hostile to Ademulegun; they never agreed on several issues, especially because of what he termed the Brigade Commander’s romance with the Northern political leaders. I then asked: ‘What about Shodeinde, one of the most decent and gentle officers we had?’

"At that point, Nzeogwu visibly became truly angry but not with me. He was quite upset with his other colleagues in Lagos, his co-conspirators in the South, especially (Major Emmanuel) Ifeajuna and others at the core of the planning. He said there was no such plan for a one-sided execution, that is, killing of the officers from the North. I was not too convinced, but he sounded quite sincere and it truly sounded like he was double-crossed by his colleagues. I then made him realise, just in case he didn’t know, the enormity of the problem they had created. I said: ‘Do you realise what you have done? You’ve taught other people what they could do, and it could go against anybody or group in the future’…My well-known position remains that Nzeogwu was ‘a misguided but gallant soldier with principles’, which was a primary reason I ordered that he be buried with full military honours after he died in battle during the civil war…"

That passage is deeply revealing.

It suggests that even among the coup planners themselves, there may not have been a unified understanding of what they were actually doing. Nzeogwu appeared shocked by the pattern of killings and angry with some of his co-conspirators, especially Major Ifeajuna and others involved in the Lagos operations.

But that raises even more troubling questions.

What exactly was the rationale behind the selection of targets? Why were some people marked for death while others were spared? Why was Brigadier Ademulegun killed alongside his pregnant wife? Why was the wife of Ahmadu Bello also murdered? Even in war, civilized people understand the distinction between combatants and innocent family members.

These are not small moral questions. They reveal the terrifying recklessness that often accompanies violent political extremism.

Nzeogwu himself may eventually have realized that he had entered a conspiracy where different participants carried different motives. Some may have spoken the language of national reform while secretly pursuing personal vendettas, ethnic resentments, ideological fantasies, or private ambitions.

That is one of the enduring dangers of political violence: once violence is unleashed, nobody truly controls it anymore.

The saddest part is that these young men destroyed not only lives but the stability of an entire country. The January 1966 coup triggered a chain reaction, the revenge coup, ethnic massacres, the collapse of trust within the military, the civil war, and decades of mutual suspicion that Nigeria still struggles with today.

Yet my greatest concern is not even the past itself.

My greatest concern is that many Nigerians still have not learned the lesson.

Even today, there are young people who believe complex national problems can be solved through simplistic, radical, emotional solutions. They speak with absolute certainty despite limited understanding of history, human psychology, ethnic tensions, or the consequences of violence. They romanticize “revolution” without understanding that revolutions often consume innocent people first.

Nzeogwu may have eventually realized that he was part of something far uglier and more dangerous than he initially imagined. But by then, the country had already been pushed into a fire that consumed millions of lives and altered Nigeria forever.

History becomes truly dangerous when societies refuse to learn from it.

Hon. Zegejir Promises Quality Representation As He Picks House Of Representatives Nomination Form Under APM

Hon. Zegejir Promises Quality Representation As He Picks House Of Representatives Nomination Form Under APM

By Terfa Naswem

Hon. Isaac Gwaza Zegejir yesterday, picked his nomination form for  House of Representatives under the Allied Peoples' Movement (APM) to contest the 2027 House of Representatives election to represent the good people of Vandeikya/Konshisha Federal Constituency in Benue State.

Hon. Zegejir has the penchant for transformative ideals and is keen on reigniting the flames of clearing the path for Jechira to take a different dimension in development, coherence and convergence of progressive ideas to take Jechira to the realm of rapid positive change.

He is a  man who has the concomitant of hard work, resilience and resolute in his tasks; his ingenuity, prudence and probity has placed him on the scale of representative acumen which are exceptional representative qualities Jechira needs from anyone who wants to navigate the representative ship of Jechira through the stormy seas of lack of quality representation.

He is determined to complement the good work of the Executive Governor of Benue State, Rev.  Fr. Dr. Hyacinth Iormem Alia if given the opportunity to represent the good people of Vandeikya and Konshisha. He appealed to them to give Gov. Alia all the support he needs and take his reelection bid as their top priority to vote for him massive in 2027 gubernatorial election in Benue State.

In line with Benjamin Rush’s philosophy of representative government, Hon. Zegejir ideals are centered on the idea that quality representation requires a highly educated, morally disciplined, and compassionate representative who can touch the lives of their constituents beyond measure. He believes that merely establishing laws was insufficient, and that citizens must be actively molded by state-sponsored education into "republican machines".

Pendatyo-U-Tiv Congratulates Gov. Alia On His Victory In APC Gubernatorial Primary Election

...Says the second coming of Alia; the foundation for final redemption of Benue State

By Terfa Naswem

Pendatyo-U-Tiv, Rt. Hon. Chief (Mrs) Dorothy Mato  congratulates the Executive Governor of Benue State, Rev. Fr. Dr. Hyacinth Iormem Alia on his victory in the APC gubernatorial primary election held yesterday across Benue State.

She said the plentitude of love and support displayed by the people of Benue for him is a magnificent reflection of his assiduous and non-callous governance for the common good.

Acknowledging Gov. Alia's disparate leadership methodology, says such methodology in his second coming in 2027 will orchestrate the foundation for the final redemption of Benue State where most of the deplorable areas will be revived and the hopes of the people rekindled for more prospects, and creating a paradigm for his successors to follow to take Benue State to the realm of unprecedented development.

She said as the supporters of Gov. Alia were ebullient and happy upon hearing the final result, they should always be in equanimity when opposition elements provoke them; they should mobilize as many voters as possible to vote for Gov. Alia in 2027 gubernatorial election as winning the primary election is just the beginning and not the end yet.

Gov. Alia Is Antithesis To Underdevelopment, Assiduous In The Transformation Of Benue State

Gov. Alia Is Antithesis To Underdevelopment, Assiduous In The Transformation Of Benue State

... He is following the footsteps of Nelson Rockefeller

By Terfa Naswem

The Executive Governor of Benue State, Rev. Fr. Dr. Hyacinth Iormem Alia has the concomitant of people-oriented leadership which his probity and prudence have taken him to the realm of unprecedented development for Benue State.

He upholds the development philosophy of one of the best governors in the United States, Nelson Rockefeller who served as the 49th Governor of New York for nearly 15 years, from January 1, 1959, to December 18, 1973. A Republican, he was elected to four terms and resigned just before the end of his final term to focus on national policy commission work before becoming Vice President. His development philosophy focused on economic growth, job creation, and policy innovation to address local needs of New Yorkers. Gov. Alia is doing the same to address the local needs of the people of Benue State through his infrastructure development and rural community development initiatives. Just like Nelson, Alia has typically prioritized public-private partnerships, infrastructure investment, and education to enhance state competitiveness, while navigating federal-state relations and political accountability.

The deplorable state of Benue was the major reason Gov. Alia contested the gubernatorial election in 2023 to bring his transformative reforms in repositioning Benue State for the common good.

The cupidity of past governors of Benue orchestrated the unacceptable level of underdevelopment in the state. With Gov. Alia on board, his dogmatism, reverence, dislike for abysmal and amorphous leadership and tenacity are transforming Benue in infrastructure development and other aspects.

His people-oriented governance has instilled hope in the people of Benue and dispelled ambivalent feelings about the redemption of the state by eliciting unending happiness from their heart, going to bed every night with joy that the Messiah of Benue State has finally come after many years of waiting.

Gov. Alia's transformative impact has rekindled the hope of the people of Benue State who believe that Benue, sooner than later, will become one of the most developed states in Nigeria by the time Alia completes his second term in 2031.

Why Governor Alia's Infrastructure And Economic Development Footprints Are Winning National Recognition.

Why Governor Alia's Infrastructure And Economic Development Footprints Are Winning National Recognition.

By Orseer Mnzughulga

There are moments in the life of a state when leadership transcends politics and becomes a visible force etched into roads, bridges, livelihoods, investments, and public confidence. In Benue State, the administration of Rev. Fr. Dr. Hyacinth Iormem Alia, is experiencing one of such defining moments.

The conferment of the "Platinum Best Performing Governor of the Year in Infrastructure and Economic Development 2026" on Governor Alia scheduled to hold today, May 8, 2026, at the Transcorp Hilton Abuja is not merely ceremonial applause. It is a national acknowledgment of visible governance, strategic development, and a bold attempt to redefine the destiny of Benue State within an unusually short period.

Since assuming office on May 29, 2023, as the 6th democratically elected Governor of Benue State, Rev. Fr. Dr. Hyacinth Iormem Alia has governed with an energy and developmental urgency that many political observers did not anticipate. Within three years, the administration has aggressively pursued infrastructure renewal, economic expansion, urban modernization, and grassroots connectivity in ways that have dramatically altered the public conversation about governance in Benue.

This external recognition of Governor Alia's notable and undeniable imprints on Benue’s infrastructural development is therefore not accidental. It is evidence that the administration’s efforts are being observed beyond partisan boundaries and beyond the borders of the state itself.

For years, Benue's infrastructural conversation was dominated by abandonment, inaccessible rural communities, decaying urban roads, flooding caused by poor drainage systems, and economic stagnation. Citizens had become accustomed to promises that rarely materialized into visible transformation. Yet, within barely three years, the Alia administration is rewriting that narrative through what can best be described as an aggressive infrastructure revolution.

One of the most visible indicators of this transformation is the extensive road development strategy spread across the state.

In Makurdi the state Capital alone, over 37 intra-city road networks have either been completed or are undergoing major reconstruction across strategic areas such as New GRA, Adeke/Achusa, Wurukum, North Bank, and High Level. These roads are not merely asphalt projects, they represent mobility, economic access, urban expansion, and restored public confidence.

Perhaps even more symbolic are the major underpasses completed at High Level in Makurdi and Gyado Junction in Gboko awaiting commissioning. For years, these locations represented congestion, confusion, and infrastructural neglect. Today, they stand as monuments of modernization and urban renewal. The approval for another underpass project in Otukpo further demonstrates a government determined to modernize critical urban centers across the state.

The administration's infrastructural ambition stretches far beyond the state capital. Across Benue's local government areas, construction equipment and development activities have become increasingly common sights. The ongoing construction of the 35-kilometre Obarike Ito–Adum East–Oju Road in Oju Local Government Area is expected to significantly improve transportation and commercial activities in the axis.

In Vandeikya and surrounding areas, the Mbawuar–Bako Tyam–Adikpo–Calaba Road with a spur to Mede-Mbera-Mbaako, covering about 34 kilometres, is steadily progressing.

Equally notable are the Akaazua–Muemue–Anhyura–Mbadede Road projects which are enhancing connectivity within rural communities that previously struggled with poor access roads.

Gboko, one of the commercial nerve centres of Benue State and the center of Tiv nation worldwide has also witnessed significant infrastructural attention. Projects such as the rehabilitation of Captain Dawns Road, construction of NKST Anzwar Road, Tser-Adi Road, and Tomatar Road collectively signal a deliberate effort to reposition the town for economic growth and easier transportation.

The story is similar in Kwande, where the Manyam–Unongo–Adikpo Road project covering 22.5 kilometres is ongoing.

In Agatu and Gwer West, the Obagaji–Okokolo–Agagbe Road spanning 43.5 kilometres promises to open up previously underserved communities. In Ado Local Government Area, the Igumale–Agila Road project is another strategic intervention designed to improve mobility and stimulate commerce.

The Governor Alia administration has also commenced work on the ambitious Oju–Awajir Road traversing Oju, Konshisha, and Gwer East Local Government Areas. Likewise, the Adikpo–Kotiyogh–Vandeikya Road with a spur to Tse Mker continues to enhance inter-community accessibility.

Other notable projects include the Ushongo–Hegha–Gbem Road, Ateku–Ikpenge–Akpagher Road in Gboko, Ityowanye Road in Buruku, Vandeikya–Korinya–Wuese Road, Tsar-Chenge-Abwa-Dagba Road, and Dagba–Adamgba–Chi Road. Each of these projects carries enormous social and economic implications for local populations that had long suffered infrastructural isolation.

What makes the Alia administration's infrastructure drive particularly remarkable is not merely the number of projects but their geographical spread.  Governor Alia's administration is intentional about touching all 23 local government areas through the award of over 50 road projects statewide.

Equally transformative is the reconstruction of the Makurdi–Air Force Base–Renewed Hope Estate dual carriageway section of the Makurdi-Gboko Federal Highway. The ongoing reconstruction of major township roads within Makurdi metropolis, complete with solar-powered traffic lights, solar-powered bus stops, and water pipe reinstatement, reflects a more modern and integrated urban development philosophy.

The reconstruction and rehabilitation of eight roads and water channels within Makurdi metropolis, alongside the reconstruction of Jonah Jang Crescent, further reveal a government deliberately addressing both mobility and environmental challenges simultaneously.

In Gboko metropolis, the ongoing phase one reconstruction of township roads, including 25.3 kilometres of dual carriageway and 5.6 kilometres of single carriageway, is reshaping the city's landscape. The approval of the Nyihemba–Anwase–Abande–Cameroon border road, including three bridges in Kwande Local Government Area, carries even broader economic implications by potentially improving cross-border trade opportunities.

Yet, infrastructure alone does not define sustainable development. What distinguishes Governor Alia's administration is the attempt to align infrastructure expansion with economic empowerment and wealth creation.

Through the Bureau for Entrepreneurship and Wealth Creation, the government has initiated several programs targeted at employment generation, skills acquisition, and economic inclusion. One of the most ambitious among them is the engagement of 1,450 ad-hoc staff for the Nigeria Fire Extinguisher Control initiative, with prospects for eventual absorption into the Federal Fire Service.

The administration's collaboration with the Office of the Vice President to establish a multifunctional fashion hub demonstrates a recognition that economic growth must also involve creative industries and vocational empowerment. Already, 50 individuals within the fashion industry have been shortlisted for participation.

Similarly, the renovation and rehabilitation of tailoring workshops under Public-Private Partnership arrangements highlight the government's emphasis on practical skills development. The establishment of a modern tech training hub in Makurdi further positions the administration as one attempting to prepare Benue youths for opportunities within the digital economy.

Perhaps one of the most strategic economic decisions by the Alia administration lies in the mining sector. With Benue possessing 34 solid mineral deposits out of over 43 found in Nigeria, the governor has moved aggressively to organize and sanitize the sector.

The partnership with mining consultants, Sound Core, is designed to help the state properly harness mining opportunities while eliminating illegal operations. The rollout of the annual surface rent scheme, projected to generate about N3.5 billion in revenue, indicates a government searching for innovative internally generated revenue sources beyond federal allocations.

The administration's efforts to flush out illegal miners while educating host communities on lawful benefits from mining activities reflect a more structured approach to resource management. The constitution of the Mineral Resource and Environmental Management Committee under the leadership of the Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice further demonstrates institutional seriousness.

The inauguration of Mining Marshals to protect mineral resources and address conflicts within host communities adds another layer of strategic governance in a sector long plagued by lawlessness and exploitation.

Financial inclusion has also emerged as a major pillar of the administration’s economic agenda through the establishment of Novus Microfinance Bank. Since commencing operations in June 2024 after securing its CBN license, the bank has become an important platform for grassroots financial empowerment.

The engagement of 3,000 Agent Banking Officers across all council wards in the state represents a bold effort to deepen financial access within rural communities. Beyond direct employment, the bank has facilitated BVN enrolment and financial inclusion for over 1,000 customers across the 23 local government areas.

The impact of the bank's lending schemes is already visible. More than 100 nano businesses have accessed loans to sustain and expand their operations. Over 100 students have had their school fees settled through the "My Pikin School Fees Loan" initiative, while more than 300 Benue civil servants have benefited from side-hustle loans to support small-scale farming and agricultural ventures.

Importantly, the bank operates as a fully digitalized institution integrated with NIBSS and Interswitch platforms, thereby positioning Benue within Nigeria’s rapidly evolving financial technology ecosystem.

The significance of all these initiatives is not merely in statistics or project lists. It lies in the broader psychological transformation taking place within the state. Development, when visible and widespread, restores public confidence. It gives citizens a renewed sense of belonging and possibility.

Governor Alia's administration is certainly not without challenges. No government is. The realities of insecurity for decades, economic pressures, inflation, and infrastructural deficits accumulated over decades cannot disappear overnight. However, what appears undeniable is the administration's determination to confront these realities with unusual speed and visibility.

This is why the national recognition bestowed upon Governor Alia resonates beyond politics. It speaks to a growing perception that Benue State is gradually transitioning from a state long associated with unrealized potential into one increasingly identified with active reconstruction and strategic development.

Awards alone do not build roads, create jobs, or transform economies. But they can serve as important affirmations that leadership efforts are visible and impactful.

In the case of Governor Hyacinth Alia, the "Platinum Best Performing Governor of the Year in Infrastructure and Economic Development 2026" award symbolize more than personal recognition. It reflects the aspirations of a people eager to witness tangible progress after years of developmental frustration.

Indeed, the greatest challenge before the administration now is sustainability.

Expectations have risen, citizens are watching, critics are observing and supporters are hopeful. The momentum already created must not slow down.

For now, however, one reality stands clear: in less than four years, Governor Alia has successfully placed infrastructure and economic development at the centre of governance in Benue State, and the nation is beginning to take notice.

Congratulations to His Excellency Governor Hyacinth Iormem Alia and his administration. May there indeed be no slackness. More grace, good health, clarity, and goodwill to His Excellency as the work of rebuilding Benue continues.

Agah Has The Concomitant Of Leadership To Represent Mata State Constituency

Agah Has The Concomitant Of Leadership To Represent Mata State Constituency

By Terfa Naswem

As Mata State Constituency searches for a representative that has the concomitant of all-inclusive representation, the searchlights point at Hon.  Dr. Daniel Tordue Agah; a man whose penchant for progress and development is top-notch.

Mata State Constituency is seriously begging for attention as it has over the years suffered so much infrastructural deficits and the empowerment of constituents being neglected.

Just like Benjamin Rush (1745–1813) who was a foundational American leader, physician, and social reformer whose leadership philosophy was deeply rooted in Enlightenment rationalism, Christian benevolence, and civic republicanism. Dr. Agah follows his footsteps not only as a social reformer but also enlightenment rationalism, Christian benevolence, and civic republicanism. He believes that the people of Mata State Constituency need to be placed on the trajectory of development through these cardinal points which he has the concomitant to do them but needs to be elected to represent the people of Mata at the Benue State House of Assembly, BSHoA where he'll have the wherewithal for all-inclusive representation through his probity and prudence. Just like Rush, Agah's approach to leadership emphasized moral integrity, education, and the proactive, often aggressive, pursuit of public good, viewing representative leadership as a duty to improve society, reform institutions, and foster human potential.

Those from Mata State Constituency of Ushongo Local Government Area of Benue State who have not registered as members of All Progressives Congress (APC) should do so for them to be qualified to vote for him in the forthcoming direct primaries.

If they don't have voters cards too, they should go to the nearest INEC office and register to obtain theirs so that they will vote for Dr. Agah after he wins his primary election on the platform of APC.

... Calls on supporters to get their voters' cards, APC e-registration membership cards

By Terfa Naswem

Benue State Commissioner for Transportation, Power and Renewable Energy, Hon. Joseph Ter Jir extols the Executive Governor of Benue State, Rev. Fr. Dr. Hyacinth Iormem Alia for repositioning Benue State on the trajectory of unprecedented development.

He is extremely impressed with the tremendous impact Gov. Alia is making on the people of Benue State, stating that those who are hellbent on propelling activities that will impinge on the progressive roadmap of Gov. Alia for Benue State will never succeed.

It is incontrovertible that since 1999, Benue State has never witnessed this kind of development which hitherto was only in the illusions of Benue indigenes. Hon. Jir notes that Alia is not a neophyte in progressive leadership and has surmounted most of the impediments in his government which made the completed and ongoing projects possible.

In ensuring that Gov. Alia continues with his good work for Benue State, Hon. Jir appeals to supporters of Alia who don't have voters' cards to go to the nearest INEC office and register to obtain theirs so that they will be able to reelect Alia.

Since the new electoral law has made emphasis on direct primaries and consensus, expunging delegates participation, he urged supporters of Alia to register as All Progressives Congress (APC) members through e-registration which is expected to continue after the congresses are completed.

He said if they obtain their APC e-membership cards, they will be qualified to participate in the direct primaries to give Alia the go-ahead as the candidate of APC for his reelection including others.

Igbogo Hosts His Second Football Tournament At Mbawar, Appeals For Peace And Unity

Igbogo Hosts His Second Football Tournament At Mbawar, Appeals For Peace And Unity

By Cephas Dantsoho, Terfa Naswem

As a result of his love for sports and social gatherings in fostering peace, love, unity and development, the people of Wuese, Gaav, Mbawar Council Ward in Konshisha Local Government Area of Benue State witnessed an atmosphere of excitement and unity as Engr. Japhet Igbogo successfully organized a community football tournament that brought together youths, sports lovers, and residents from within and around the area. The much-anticipated final match of the tournament was played on Tuesday, 23rd December, 2025 at NKST Secondary School, Wuese, Mbawar, Konshisha marking the climax of weeks of competitive football and community engagement.

The tournament, which kicked off earlier in December, was aimed at promoting grassroots sports development, fostering unity among youths, and encouraging positive social interaction within the community. Teams from different neighborhoods participated, displaying remarkable talent, teamwork, and sportsmanship throughout the competition.

Speaking during the final match, Engr. Japhet Igbogo emphasized the importance of sports as a tool for youth empowerment and peace-building. He noted that football has the power to unite people beyond social, cultural, and economic differences, and described the tournament as part of his commitment to supporting youth development and community growth in Wuese Gaav.

The final match, played on Tuesday, attracted a large crowd of enthusiastic supporters, community leaders, and football fans who turned out to cheer their teams. The game was highly competitive and entertaining, reflecting the high level of preparation and determination shown by the finalists. Security and organization were well coordinated, ensuring a peaceful and enjoyable event for all attendees.

At the end of the match, awards and recognitions were presented to outstanding teams and players for their performances during the tournament. Engr. Igbogo commended all participating teams for their discipline and resilience, while also appreciating the organizing committee, match officials, and supporters for contributing to the success of the event.

Community members expressed gratitude to Engr. Japhet Igbogo for sponsoring and organizing the tournament, describing it as timely and impactful. Many called for the competition to become an annual event, citing its role in discovering local talent, reducing youth restiveness, and strengthening community bonds.

The successful conclusion of the Wuese Gaav football tournament on Tuesday stands as a testament to the positive impact of sports-driven initiatives and highlights Engr. Japhet Igbogo’s dedication to community development through meaningful and inclusive programmes.

Recall that in April, 2025, Igbogo hosted his first Unity Cup for Mbawar which the final match was played on 17th May, 2025 at the football field of NKST Secondary School, Wuese-Gaav, Mbawar, as Young Stars Football Club Wuese defeated Super Stars Alabesa on penalties after the match ended in 2-2 draw.

The tournament played recently was his second as Mbawar defeated Mbatem by 2-0.  Igbogo has a burning desire to organize subsequent tournaments on a wider coverage where all council wards in Konshisha will participate.

Igbogo assured his people that he is determined elicit unending happiness from them through various programmes and initiatives that will be all-inclusive for men, youth, women and children if he will be elected in 2027 to represent Konshisha State Constituency in the Benue State House of Assembly.

Just like Thomas Jefferson, the 3rd President of the United States of America, Igbogo believes that the welfare of the whole is the proper purpose of representative democracy, which takes development to the grassroots and at the same time, creates  communication channels that connect those at the grassroots to the state government in effectively expressing their concerns in times of challenges and pouring out plaudits in times of commendable impact made by the government.

C.D. Akran’s Vision of Community Development and Badagry’s Future, By Ṣeun Williams

C.D. Akran’s Vision of Community Development and Badagry’s Future, By Ṣeun Williams

The address delivered by Ahọlu Claudius Dosa Akran at the 1961 International Conference on Community Development held in Seoul, South Korea, represents a crucial historical artefact for understanding both the ideological foundations of postcolonial Nigerian development and the potential pathways toward addressing contemporary Badagry’s underdevelopment. As both the Akran of Badagry and Western Nigeria’s Minister of Economic Planning and Community Development, his position embodied a unique blend of traditional authority and modern governance that gave his development philosophy particular authenticity and practical grounding. His ideas, which are released along with this essay, remain remarkably relevant for contemporary Badagry because they anticipated the tensions between local agency and external intervention that continue to undermine development projects across Nigeria.

Akran defined community development as a movement designed to promote voluntary participation, with heavy reliance on local initiative, supported by technical services that encourage rather than replace self-help. This definition explicitly rejected the colonial approach, where British development officers imposed projects like a wealthy father instructing his children about what was good for them. Under colonialism, Akran observed, community development existed separately from actual community life, neither influencing nor influenced by the organic history of the villages themselves. The result was abandoned infrastructure, from unused latrines to neglected roads, because communities felt no ownership over projects imposed from above. His critique also extended to dictatorial models where visible progress comes through compulsion, arguing that such approaches fundamentally contradict the civil liberties essential to genuine development.

Historical Perspective" By C.D. Akran

What makes Akran’s framework historiographically significant is his insistence on rooting modern development in local structures and grassroots institutions. He identified indigenous systems like communal farm clearing, age-grade task assignments, and Esusu savings groups as foundations requiring only slight updates to serve contemporary development goals. This sharply departed from 1960s modernisation thinking, which typically viewed traditional structures as obstacles requiring wholesale replacement. Akran instead articulated what social scientists today call participatory development, recognising decades in advance that sustainable development must build upon rather than demolish existing social networks and practices.

Akran’s practical innovations in Western Nigeria demonstrate his philosophy in action. The literacy campaign model shared responsibility among village committees, local government councils, and regional government, with each level contributing distinct resources while maintaining local ownership. Training camps and youth club movements deliberately combined civic education with traditional cultural forms. Akran’s system of dividing Western Nigeria into blocks of ten villages, each developing consensus-based plans through assemblies where villagers met with technical experts, represented remarkable bottom-up planning for its era. These plans would aggregate upward into divisional, circle, and ultimately regional frameworks, ensuring that overall development responded to local priorities.

For contemporary Badagry, grappling with infrastructural deficits, youth unemployment, and political marginalisation relative to other parts of Lagos, Akran’s framework offers critical insights. First, his emphasis on voluntary participation and indigenous initiative suggests that Badagry’s challenges cannot be solved through state-imposed megaprojects alone, however well-intentioned. Rather, true development must activate existing community structures, from traditional institutions and community development associations to civil society organisations and women’s societies, as well as youth groups and student unions. Second, Akran’s focus on leadership training and civic education through institutions like youth clubs and adult literacy campaigns points toward human capital development founded on cultural continuity. Third, his model of development financing, where communities provide labour and land while government offers technical expertise and partial funding support, creates genuine partnership and ensures local ownership.

Practical recommendations flowing from Akran’s vision would involve establishing community development blocks across Badagry Division, facilitated by thought leaders who could connect communities with relevant expertise. Each block would develop participatory plans identifying local needs and available resources, with government providing matching grants rather than fully funded projects. Youth organisations could be revitalised around both cultural preservation and modern skills, following Akran’s model of arts festivals celebrating indigenous heritage while preparing young people for contemporary economic participation. Adult education could expand beyond basic literacy to include entrepreneurship, civic engagement, and leadership development, delivered through community institutions rather than external agencies.

Perhaps most importantly, Akran’s framework insists that Badagry’s development must emerge from within, building upon its unique historical experiences, cultural resources, and institutional capacities. His warning that development champions must become celebrants of the marriage between old institutions and new knowledge remains profoundly relevant. Too often, contemporary development initiatives in Badagry have replicated the colonial pattern Akran critiqued, imposing external visions without adequate consultation or integration with local realities. Reviving his vision means trusting Badagry’s communities to identify their priorities, mobilise their resources, and drive their own development when provided with genuine partnership rather than paternalistic intervention.

This approach requires patience and political will, but as Ahọlu C.D. Akran understood from his dual position as traditional ruler and modern minister, sustainable development admits no shortcuts around authentic community ownership.

The meeting took place on Sunday, 21st December, 2025 at the residence of Dr. Simon Gesa in Tongo, Konshisha Local Government Area of Benue State.

A cow, bags of rice and cash were given to them in the spirit of the celebration, stating that, in spite of not being in government yet, the items were signs of his enormous love for them, and will surely work collectively with them to rebuild Konshisha if he will be elected in 2027.

He commended the elders in Konshisha who are community and nation builders in reshaping divisive ideologies and redirecting steps on a progressive path.

Igbogo was represented at the meeting by his elder brother, Comr. Tivkaa Tertsea who interfaced with him and the elders in ensuring a smooth meeting.

Dr. Gesa, the Chairman of APC Elders' Council in Konshisha commended Igbogo for his exceptional display of love for his people. He affirmed that his gesture of goodwill, despite not yet elected indicated that he will carry the people of Konshisha along in his collective representative leadership ideology.

In reaffirming the statement by Dr. Gesa on Igbogo, Elder Wese Mbatyovde eulogized Igbogo as an aspirant who has decided to play his politics in a very peaceful manner devoid of any divisive statements or elements that ignite acrimony.

The All Progressives Congress (APC), Chairman of Mbawar and ALGON Chairman, Hon. Ishu Jacob Aondona appreciated Igbogo for carrying them along even when he has not yet been elected, believing that he will do wonderfully if he will be elected in 2027.

Elder Solomon Ahar while extolling Igbogo for remembering them in the Christmas celebration, commended him for the potent impact he has made on the lives of many children, youths, women and elders in Konshisha and beyond.

He prayed that the infallible God should continue to give him the wisdom and strength to do more and grant him all his heart desires.

Elder Kindan Zege was not left out in the euphoria of plaudits for Igbogo as he stated some of the good deeds he has exhibited which benefited the people of Konshisha.
